Freedom Driver Training

Learn Something New Today

Welcome to our Driving School, the place where you can learn new skills and feel accomplished, every single day.

Unlike some driving schools/Instructors we specialise and only offer driving tuition for those with a disability, for many driving schools getting an older automatic car is a way of filling an empty diary, Freedom Driver Training has years of experience training clients to drive in vehicles with manual and automatic transmission as well as adapted vehicles for those with a physical disability.  Whatever your requirements passing the L test, confidence building sessions, rehabilitation or refresher training of experienced drivers, we can help you.

Our trainers are experts in delivering driving tuition to people with a requirement to drive with alternative vehicle controls. They have a wealth of knowledge and are used to working with other agencies such as the Driving Mobility Centres, DVLA and DVSA, they are experts in their field.

The Freedom Driver Training has been in existence since 2006 and believe that the ability to drive is fundamental to all our freedom and independence. We help in people that are learning to drive for the first time or a looking to return to driving after a life changing event or illness.

About Our Driving School

Learning Has No Bounds

Since our founding, Freedom Driver Training has had the opportunity to help countless students acquire their freedom and independence.

Our client centred approach is about creating a conversation between the learner and the instructor that is based on mutual respect the instructor brings to the learning process their knowledge, understanding and experience. If they rely simply on telling the learner what they should do they will probably be able to teach them enough to pass their test. However, all the evidence suggests that learners in this sort of relationship do not really change the way they think and quickly forget what they have been taught. There is a better chance of a long-lasting change in understanding and behaviour if the instructor:

–  presents their knowledge, understanding and experience clearly and effectively

–  listens to the learner’s reactions to that input

–  helps the learner to identify any obstacles to understanding and change

–  supports the learner to identify strategies for overcoming those obstacles for themselves

foundational skills, develop new techniques and confidently move forward in their learning journey.

Learner Driving Course

Over the years we have come to recognise that lessons need to be specific for each client and not prescriptive like some other driving schools, therefore there is not a one size fits all style to what we do, instead our sessions are based on our three key principles.

  1. Every training session should be relaxed and calm.  You can't learn anything if your stressed and anxious.

  2. There should be a clear understanding of what is happening in that session and how each objective can be achieved.

  3. Every session should be productive.  A review will completed at the end of each session to ensure that the learning outcomes have been achieved.

Mature Driver Review

To raise awareness of the challenges faced by older drivers and to offer then and their families support on  staying safe behind the wheel, we have put together some practical tips and information.

As the UK population ages, more drivers are now aged over 75 than ever before. And the number of pensioners behind the wheel is predicted to continue to grow significantly. But, despite some of the headlines, older drivers are statistically one of the safest groups behind the wheel, and access to a car is critical for many of them for their independence, health and emotional wellbeing.

Top tips for older drivers - staying safe behind the wheel
Experts from the Older Drivers Forum highlight four simple things you can do to carry on driving safely for longer:

  1.  Make sure you have regular eyesight tests with an optician See here for the Older Drivers Forum’s recommendations on eyesight.

  2. Ensure you seek medical advice about any medicines you are taking which may affect your driving. The Department for Transport has issued guidelines on driving while taking prescribed medicines here.

  3. There are certain medical conditions which by law you must inform the DVLA about. For a full list of conditions including glaucoma, strokes, heart conditions and diabetes about which you are obliged to notify the DVLA click here.

  4. Undertake a voluntary appraisal of your driving to brush up on your skills and carry on driving safely for longer

  5. When was the last time someone appraised your driving? It’s fun and can really build your confidence, give it a go! Find out details of available reviews and assessments here.
